We stated earlier that good quality forage is the basic requirement of a horse ration. However, forages tend to be deficient in vitamins and minerals and are likely imbalanced when it comes to calcium and phosphorus. For mature horses on forage-only rations, supplying a multivitamin/mineral supplement should be adequate. For horses with increased nutritional requirements, a properly balanced grain/protein/vitamin/mineral ration is ideal. The market has numerous horse supplements available so again, you are advised to seek the advice of your veterinarian or equine nutritionist to help you design the appropriate ration for your special needs horse!
