Can you tell if your horse is in pain?
As horse owners, we understand that our horses can feel pain, and that treating them with appropriate pain management strategies will help improve their wellbeing. However, it may not always be easy to recognize when they are painful.
A group of researchers from Italy, Germany and the UK recently published and presented their findings from a study, which evaluated pain in horses that had undergone castration using changes in their facial expressions. By assessing the presence (or absence) of 6 specific facial expressions using a grading scale they developed, horses experiencing pain could be identified.
